The whole entire first side is comprised of the classic title track, which paints a chilling picture of a future world where technology is in control (Peart's lyrics for the piece being influenced by Ayn Rand). Instead of choosing between prog rock or heavy rock, both styles are merged together to create an interesting and original approach. The band knew it was now or never with their fourth release, and they delivered just in time – 1976's 2112 proved to be their much sought-after commercial breakthrough and remains one of their most popular albums. Whereas Rush's first two releases, their self-titled debut and Fly by Night, helped create a buzz among hard rock fans worldwide, the more progressive third release, Caress of Steel, confused many of their supporters. For extra festive cheer, the band’s website states: “Please note that due to the release date for this title being very close to Christmas, your order will not arrive to you by December 25th, 2016.” 2112 is reissued on 16 December.

The 3LP vinyl edition will also be available on its own and there are various bundles. A 2CD+DVD edition loses the vinyl (and the tat) and gives you the album, the covers, and the video content for a fraction of the super deluxe price. If you order this big box through you get a bonus seven-inch single ( The Twilight Zone (b/w Lessons). This newly-remastered edition was remastered at Abbey Road from original analogue masters. You also get a ‘Starman Turntable Mat’ in the box.

This new 40th anniversary super deluxe includes two CDs, three vinyl LPs and a DVD and plenty of memorabilia and other bits (tat?) like badges, a handbill and “ticket stub lithos”. A mere four years of the album (which included a super deluxe comic book edition with CD and 5.1 surround sound blu-ray audio) Canadian rock band are preparing an even more ‘super’ deluxe edition of their 1976 album 2112 for a December release.
